Ceres is the largest object located in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. It was first discovered in 1801 by Giuseppe Piazzi who spotted it as the first member of the asteroid belt. It was originally considered a planet, but was reclassified as an asteroid in the 1850s. After being Called an asteroid for many years scientists classified it as a dwarf planet in 2006. Ceres comprises nearly a third of the asteroid belt’s total mass, for comparison sake Pluto is still 14 times more massive than ceres.

Ceres is named for the Roman goddess of corn and harvests. The word cereal comes from the same name.

Unlike other asteroids, Ceres is round because it is large enough for gravity to mold its shape into a sphere. The composition of ceres is believed to be conducive for the prospects for life.

It is interesting that Johann Elert Bode, in 1772, first suggested about the possibility that an undiscovered planet could exist between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Bode’s idea was based on the Titius–Bode law that was first proposed in 1766.
